Portland Jetport Airport
1001 Westbrook St, Portland, Maine, USAFacts and History about Portland Jetport Airport
Portland International Jetport is a public airport located approximately 4 mi/6.5 km west of Portland, Maine, USA. It is the busiest airport in the state of Maine with their peak, so far, during 2019 when they saw 2,180,154 passenger movements.
The airfield was first founded in the late 1920s by Dr. Clifford “Kip” Strange when he needed space for his JN-4 “Jenny” Biplane. The first commercial flight took place in 1931 at which point the airfield had been named Stroudwater Airport. The first commercial flight was between Portland and Boston operated by Boston-Maine Airways.
The city of Portland purchased the airfield in 1936 and changed its name to Portland-Westbrook Municipal Airport, referring to the location of the last directional light before the airport which was located near the city of Westbrook.
This is also where the jetport’s IATA code PWM originates from as it is the initials of the airport’s name at the time. The ICAO code is KPWM.
Two runways with gravel surface were constructed in the mid 1930’s, before the city of Portland purchased the airfield when they built a third. The present main runway was built in 1957 and first lengthened in 1966, and the current terminal building first opened in 1968 and has been expanded several times since.
Today the jetport has two runways with asphalt surface stretching 7,200 ft/2,195 m and 6,100 ft/1,859 m respectively in length.
The name Portland International Jetport came about in the late 1960s when the commercial jet service arrived as the new and faster way of travel by air, and the name stuck, perhaps to not get confused with Portland International Airport (PDX) in the state of Oregon.
Portland International Jetport played a role in the September 11 attacks as the plane that hit the first World Trade Center tower, the North tower, took off from it intending to fly to Boston Logan International Airport.
PWM has one terminal divided into three levels. It has a total of 11 gates located on Level 2 where we also find the security control and a skybridge connecting the terminal with the parking garage.
The jetport serves Portland, Maine and it is a focus city for Elite Airways.
